ILOILO City – Here’s another proposal to maintain peace and order at Smallville Complex in Mandurriao district – stop the sale of liquor by 1 a.m.
According to proponent Councilor Joshua Alim, however, his proposal covers not only the popular strip of restaurants, bars and hotels in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao but the whole city.
Mayor Jose Espinosa III earlier proposed that restobars at Smallville close at 2 a.m.
The two officials came up with these proposals following the fatal shooting of a young man at Smallville on Dec. 3 around 5:30 a.m.
According to Alim, his proposal does not only ensure peace and order but also preserves health.
“Kon sobra ka inom indi man mayo,” said Alim.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved on first reading Alim’s proposed ordinance.
Even sari-sari stores in the barangays would be covered, according to the councilor.
But to give more teeth to the proposed ordinance, Alim said he would welcome other suggestions.
He clarified that the proposal does not prohibit the drinking of alcoholic beverages, just their sale beyond 1 a.m.
“If you want inom kamo ‘ya sa inyo balay,” he said.
Mayor Espinosa, on the other hand, said he may issue an executive order imposing a 2 a.m. curfew for Smallville establishments.
“Total shutdown. Wala sang may mabilin sa sulod,” he said.
However, he would first consult the City Legal Office and City Administrator Hernando Galvez, said the mayor.
“Ang usual nga gakatabo kon ma-last order 2 a.m., mahambal ang customer may bilin pa nga order, amat-amaton inom asta maagahan kamo da. Indi kamo matabog,” said Espinosa.
If his proposal is realized, the mayor said, all Smallville customers must be obliged to leave by 2 a.m. whether they have fully consumed their orders or not.
Early this week, Espinosa ordered the enhancement of police visibility at Smallville.
“Our policemen serve an important role in strengthening safety and security of the public. They must improve their operations. Their rapid response to emergencies is needed,” stressed Espinosa./PN
