MANILA – Negrense boxer Aston Palicte retained his North American Boxing Federation super flyweight title with a fifth-round stoppage win over Mexican Jose Alfredo Rodriguez yesterday at the Round Rock Sports Center in Austin, Texas.
This was the Bago City, Negros Occidental native’s first successful defense of the belt he won at the expense of American Oscar Cantu last year.
Palicte had an aggressive start, landing consecutive jabs, straight rights and an uppercut on Rodriguez. The Filipino nearly sent the Mexican down late in the third but the latter survived.
Rodriguez had his best round in the fourth when he stunned Palicte with a huge straight. But the Filipino managed to regain his form late in the period with his jabs.
Palicte went for the kill in the fifth round as a huge right floored Rodriguez in front of his corner. The Mexican was still able to stand up from the knockdown but the referee ended the match.
The 26-year-old victor could inch closer to his dream world title fight with a possible clash against Rex Tso of Hong Kong, according to his manager Jason Soong.
Palicte improved to a 24-2-0 win-loss-draw record, including 20 knockout wins, while the 28-year-old Rodriguez’s slate slid to 32-7-0, with 19 stoppage wins./PN
