ASIDE from volleyball setter Marianne Sotomil, University of the Philippines was also reportedly trying to recruit Bacolod Tay Tung High School’s discus thrower Franz Gela Bintad.
Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice president for sports, said UP reached out to him last week for a possible meeting early next year to lay down its offer to Bintad, a native of Escalante City, Negros Occidental.
“UP, through their school director Mandy Reyes, has contacted me last week for a possibility of recruiting discus thrower Franz Bintad to their athletics team,” Montalbo told Panay News.
“I want to hear their offer first and make a counter-offer if possible,” he said. “I’m only facilitating whatever would benefit our student-athletes. They still have the last say whether or not to accept any offer.”
Bintad recently won a gold medal for Area 8 during the Palarong Panlalawigan 2017 in Negros Occidental. She also placed second during the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in San Jose, Antique.
“Just like in the case of Marianne (Sotomil), we will not prevent Bintad if she decides to play in Manila,” said Montalbo.
“I want her to have the freedom to choose, but if she remains in Bacolod City, she will have no problem with her scholarship,” he added./PN
