ILOILO City – A former municipal engineer of Calinog, Iloilo and five others have been charged with online libel.
The Regional Trial Court Branch 90 in the National Capital Region has issued a warrant of arrest against the six.
Police have launched a manhunt against the former municipal engineer Jose Edeso Enriquez, Elsa Laurea Lim, Narciso Jison, Remia Cerbo Ciubal, and Judith Casa, all of Calinog, and Susan Walker from Texas, United States.
Mayor Alex Centena of Calinog charged them with violation of Section 4 (c) of Republic Act 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Under the provision were “content-related offenses,” which included cybersex, child pornography, unsolicited commercial communications, and libel.
The court recommended a P10,000 bail bond for each of the accused.
Centena claimed that the six humiliated him by posting malicious comments on a Facebook page they created.
The mayor said he learned earlier this year that the six accused him of being a drug protector, a drug pusher and a corrupt official via the social media site.
“It’s sad to know that their leader was my former municipal engineer, who was dismissed from the service by the Ombudsman for corruption,” Centena told Panay News in a phone interview.
The mayor said he was coordinating with the Iloilo Police Provincial Office and the National Bureau of Investigation for their arrest.
Centena was among the local chief executives in Western Visayas that President Rodrigo Duterte tagged to the illegal drug trade in 2016.
But the mayor claimed the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) have “cleared” him, saying he was not on their lists of suspected drug personalities.
“Again, I would like to tell the Calinognons that I am against illegal drugs,” said Centena.
“I’m willing to help the police and the PDEA run against drug personalities to make my municipality free from illegal drugs,” he added. “I appeal to the barangay officials and the community to help us.”/PN
