ILOILO City – Police officers will not indiscriminately discharge their service firearms in greeting the New Year – unless they want to give up their careers, according to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero.
“Sa susunod na taon, malaki na ang sahod ng pulis. Magpapaputok ka pa ba (Police officers are getting higher salaries next year. Are you still going to indiscriminately fire your guns)?” he said.
The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) spokesman gave the final warning to officers as the world says goodbye to 2017 at midnight tonight.
Gorero reiterated that any police officer caught and reported randomly firing their gun would face dismissal. Civilian gun holders, on the other hand, will be slapped with a criminal charge, he said.
Anyone may report a trigger-happy officer or civilian to the PRO-6 by texting or calling 0999-995-5072 or 0999-558-7914. Complainants were encouraged to record a video of the incident if possible.
The PRO-6 aims for zero indiscriminate firing incident and stray bullet injury and death this New Year.
Gorero warned that violators may be easily identified via the Philippine National Police’s database of licensed firearms and the regional crime laboratory’s Integrated Ballistics Identification System.
But Gorero said they trust that police officers will be disciplined enough – hence, the muzzles of their service firearms have not been taped./PN
