ILOILO – A little over a week after the relatively peaceful New Year celebrations in this province, the police recorded six crimes – four killings and two rapes between Jan. 9 to 11.
“We need to intensify our campaign against loose firearms kasi halos lahat ng incidents involved shooting,” said Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director.
Curbing crimes would test to the capability of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, he added.
“Dapat makuha natin ang mga armas na walang license,” said Binag.
JAN. 9
* Forty-five-year-old Dionisio Sasana of Barangay Camba-an, San Joaquin, Iloilo was fished out dead from a river around 5 p.m. He had a head injury.
The police initially believed Sasana was a drowning victim but later concluded he was murdered.
* Forty-two-year-old Mary Jane Hipolito was found dead in Barangay Pase, San Dionisio, Iloilo around 11:40 a.m. Her head was apparently struck with a big stone.
She was believed to have been raped, too, after attending a party.
* Two brothers were arrested in Barangay Bagacay, Tigbauan, Iloilo. A 13-year-old girl claimed they raped her.
Renerio Obal, 60, and younger brother Antonio, 56, were detained at the Tigbauan police station.
JAN. 11
* Ronnie Erepol, 43, was shot in Barangay Talisay, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo. A suspect was identified – Nelson Delmo, 50, but as of this writing the police was yet to catch him.
* Renan Castro was shot dead in Barangay Nauman, Mina, Iloilo around 1:30 a.m. Dennis Labto was named a suspect but his whereabouts remained unknown as of this writing.
* Fifty-three-year-old Mae Luzuriaga of Barangay Poblacion, Sara, Iloilo and a municipal government employee was shot dead around 5:45 p.m. at a refreshment parlor in Barangay Poblacion, Concepcion, Iloilo.
The suspected gunman, 24-year-old Edmar Camangyan of Barangay Preciosa, Sara, was detained at the Concepcion police station.
On the other hand, the suspected mastermind, 33-year-old Police Officer 2 Kevin Piosca of Sara, was taken to the National Bureau of Investigation.
Luzuriaga and Piosca were reportedly lovers but had a falling out over the policeman’s debts reaching over P1 million.
Camangyan and Piosca face a murder charge.
On Jan. 10 during the annual New Year’s Call of the Police Regional Office 6 in Camp Delgado, Binag urged policemen to work doubly hard now that their salaries have been doubled.
With better pay, there is no more reason for policemen to engage in illegal activities, according to Binag.
“All our personnel must acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for them to be capable, effective and credible. Last year, we began equipping our investigation, intelligence and maneuver personnel with various trainings,” said Binag.
This year, he wanted this intensified./PN
