ILOILO City – An L300 van and a 10-wheeler truck collided in Barangay Pulo Maestra Vita, Oton, Iloilo on Saturday night. Two died and four others were injured.
The van was on its way to Savannah Subdivision in Oton while the truck was bound for Antique, according to Police Officer 3 Randy Flores of the Oton police station.
The collision happened around 10:30 p.m. Van driver Ryner Grecia, 27, and helper Romeo Boloso, 38, died of severe head and body injuries.
Grecia was a resident of Barangay Dungon C, Mandurriao district here while Boloso was from Barangay Dungon B, Jaro district. Their four other injured companions were taken to the Western Visayas Medical Center. They were Fremon Bito-onon, 25; Marte Buenavista, 20; Angelo Bernardo, 18; and Ronel Diaz, 19. All of them were residents of Barangay Bungca, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
Truck driver Jerry Tingal, 40, and companion Mark Tubida, a 23-year-old resident of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, were unhurt.
Tingal, a resident of Toboso, Negros Occidental, told cops at the Oton municipal police station where he was taken that the van driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle.
“Based on our initial investigation, the van was running fast and was zigzagging on the road. It went out of its lane,” said Flores.
Tingal claimed he tried to step on the brake to avoid the wayward van but it was too late./PN
