ILOILO – Local government units (LGUs) in northern Iloilo seek to effectively manage their upland forests and mangroves, as well as rehabilitate and protect their riverbanks.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 is assisting the LGUs prepare their Forest Land Use Plans (FLUP).
An FLUP aims to promote active collaboration and partnership between the DENR, LGU and other stakeholders.
It also serves as a roadmap of LGUs in managing their forest and forestland assets with common direction, common strategies, and agreements on how to allocate, use, and manage the forest and forestland area for ensuring environmental safety, sustainability, and complementation with the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) zones.
With the help of DENR, municipal technical working groups (MTWGs) were created.
A strategy formulation workshop was also facilitated to formulate and identify management zones for production and forest protection, and to come up with a proposed land use addressing all the concerns.
“It is to the best interests of LGUs to avail themselves of DENR’s assistance in their FLUP preparation. With an approved FLUP that complements their Comprehensive Land Use Plan, LGUs will soon be in better positions to competently manage their forestlands with its resources,” said DENR regional director Jim Sampulna.
