ILOILO City – A resident of Santa Barbara, Iloilo sought the police’s help to arrest the man he thought was a lawyer and whom he tapped to file a complaint against his wife.
According to 31-year-old Hernando Sunio, he discovered that Alex Dela Rosa, 54, of Barangay Quintin Salas, Jaro district was not a lawyer after all.
However, after his arrest yesterday in an entrapment, Dela Rosa denied passing himself off as a lawyer and insisted he was representing Sunio merely as an attorney-in-fact.
The entrapment was carried out in Barangay Cadagmayan Norte, Santa Barbara around 12:30 p.m. Operatives of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) arrested Dela Rosa after Sunio gave the suspect P10,000 as further payment for legal services.
“He was visibly shocked when we arrested him,” said IPPO’s Chief Inspector Jonathan Pinuela.
According to Sunio, Dela Rosa also claimed to be a cousin of Philippine National Police’s Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa. But the suspect denied this as well.
Dela Rosa said he had studied law at the University of Iloilo but did not complete the course. He claimed it was Sunio who sought his help last year.
Sunio said he was seeking marriage annulment and planned, too, to charge his wife with adultery. He claimed having previously given Dela Rosa P20,000.
Pinuela said Dela Rosa faces charges of swindling and usurpation of authority.
Dela Rosa was taken to the Santa Barbara police station after the entrapment.
Among others, policemen recovered from Dela Rosa calling cards printed with “Atty. Alex Dela Rosa.”
“He did not resist arrest,” said Pinuela.
Sunio said he hoped to recover all the money he gave Dela Rosa./PN
