Scoring barrage forces Blackwater to a skid

MANILA – Alaska Aces bucked the absence of Calvin Abueva in taking Blackwater Elite down 88-84 in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Vic Manuel and Chris Banchero led with 16 points apiece. Kevin Racal added 14 while Jeron Teng contributed 10 for Aces to tally its fourth straight win (4-2).

Aces opened the match with a 10-2 lead on hits by Teng and Carl Bryan Cruz.

Elite rallied to snatch the lead 14-13 but Aces countered with baskets from Jvee Casio, Joachim Thoss and Banchero for a 20-16 edge.

Alaska made its largest lead 34-20 early in the second quarter with conversions from Racal and Chris Exciminiano. Elite had consecutive baskets from John Paul Erram to come close 35-43 at the half.

Blackwater kept the game close at the onset of the third but Aces managed to pull away 60-47 with baskets from Manuel, Banchero and Casio. Elite closed the quarter with another run to cut the deficit 61-67.

Elite moved closer 74-76 early in the fourth but baskets from Manuel and Casio allowed Aces to create distance 81-74. Back-to-back treys from Michael Digregorio and Rey Mark Belo pulled Elite to 80-81.

Aces distanced anew 86-80 with two free throws from Banchero and a triple from Teng. Elite had its last push 84-87 on a fast-break hit by Shej Roi Sumang. A free throw from Teng sealed the win for Alaska.

Digregorio and Belo had 15 points apiece while Erram had double-double 14 points and 21 rebounds for Elite (2-4), which suffered its third straight defeat./PN
