ILOILO City – Will two-time defending champion Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School score a three-peat victory in this year’s Dinagyang Festival ati-ati tribes competition?
Ten tribes are competing today. They are performing in five judging areas.
The competition begins after a 6 a.m. mass at the San Jose de Placer Church in Plaza Libertad.
Dinagyang is Iloilo City’s version of the Ati-atihan celebrations widely observed not only in Panay Island but also in other parts of the country. It may not be as ancient as the one in Kalibo, Aklan but it is known more for the participants’ impressive choreography and striking costumes that reflect the ingenuity, craftsmanship and artistry of the Ilonggos.
Salognon scored a back-to-back victory in the 2017 edition of the festival. It started its winning streak in 2016 by defeating them defending champion Panayanon.
Last year, Salognon presented a well-choreographed dance-drama of the classic fable Ang Amo kag ang Bao (The Monkey and the Turtle). The story was about how a poor turtle was cheated by a selfish monkey.
Hoping to defeat Salognon today are Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School, Obreros of Bo. Obrero National High School, Ilonganon of Jalandoni National High School, Dagatnon of Ramon Avanceña National High School, Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School, Buntatalanit of Tiu Cho Teg Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School, Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School, Amihan of Mandurriao National High School, and Tapasnon from Tapaz, Capiz.
This year’s champion will win P250,000 cash prize.
The first runner-up will receive P200,000; second runner-up, P175,000; third runner-up, P150,000; and fourth runner-up, P125,000.
The total cash prize allotted for the ati-ati tribes competition reached P1,360,000.
The five judging areas are Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, corner Mabini-Delgado streets, corner Quezon-Ledesma streets, and Maria Clara area.
There are also special/minor awards for best headdress, costume design, choreography, music, discipline, and street-dancing.
Dinagyang is the Hiligaynon word for revelry or merrymaking. The revelry started in 1967 when a replica of the image of the Santo Niño de Cebu was brought from Cebu to the San Jose de Placer Church here.
The image, accompanied by devotees from Cebu, was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets of the city to the tune of rumbling drums.
In 1968, the festival was formally launched. Today is its 50th edition./PN
