ILOILO City – President Rodrigo Duterte “now considers Iloilo and the rest of the Ilonggo-speaking areas” his bailiwick, said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
He made the claim yesterday, 10 days after the Jan. 18 oath-taking of some 5,000 Iloilo 3rd District local leaders led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. as new members of the President’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Four months ago, in September last year, some 4,000 local officials in Iloilo’s 1st District led by Cong. Richard Garin also took their oath as new PDP-Laban members.
“The President has unprecedented trust ratings. He has ceased to be the President of 16 million Filipinos who voted for him,” said Roque. “He is now the President of an overwhelming number of Filipinos, including Ilonggos.”
Roque was here yesterday for the Dinagyang Festival. The President was invited to grace the festivities, too, but his tight schedule prevented him.
In the 2016 presidential elections, Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas, an Ilonggo, got the highest number of votes in Iloilo province – 657,940 votes.
Sen. Grace Poe who has Ilonggo roots, too, came in second with 166,480 votes.
Then presidential candidate Duterte was third in Iloilo with 146,294 votes.
In Iloilo City, Duterte got 36,680 votes next to Roxas who got 119,972 votes.
Though he failed to attend the Dinagyang, the President released a message to the Ilonggos wishing them “a joyous and meaningful” festival.
Dinagyang, according to him, “reminds us all of the true essence of bayanihan – the communal spirit which enables localities to survive difficult times and animates people to achieve great things for the common good.”
He urged Ilonggos “to do (y)our share in building a stronger and more prosperous nation for the present and future generations.”/PN
