BACOLOD City – Thirteen weighing scales at the Central Market were found to be erroneously calibrated.
The Market Coordinating and Monitoring Task Force of the city government seized them yesterday.
Executive Assistant Ernesto Pineda, task force head, said they conducted a “spot inspection” in light of complaints that goods would weigh around 30 grams short of their actual weight when placed in other weighing scales.
Some of the seized weighing scales were “defective” and others “dilapidated,” said Pineda.
The task force also calibrated 77 weighing scales and sealed them.
The City Treasurer’s Office, through the task force, collected P11,545 as payment for the calibration.
Deceiving consumers by using wrongly calibrated weighing scales is a violation of The Consumer Act, Pineda said.
Anyone who does this will be fined with not less than P200 but not more than P1,000 and/or imprisoned for not more than a year, he said.
The Market Coordinating and Monitoring Task Force has been following a regular schedule in inspecting weighing scales in the three major public markets Central, Burgos and Libertad.
