ILOILO City – The role of local government units (LGUs) in the rabies prevention campaign is significant, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas.

DA regional rabies coordinator Dr. Pacifico Lumawag said LGUs need to step up their efforts in rabies prevention and control, as mandated by Republic Act 9482, or the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.

ā€œThe local government units are encouraged to reactivate their respective municipal rabies control committee,ā€ Lumawag said.

He added that the DA will distribute 62,900 vials of rabies vaccines to different provinces in Western Visayas this first quarter of the year.

The vaccines were delivered on the last week of February from the Bureau of Animal Industry, Lumawag said.

Allocation of the rabies vaccines will depend on the province’s dog population.

Aklan will receive 6,400 vials, Antique, 4,000, Capiz, 6,000, Guimaras, 4,000, Iloilo, 17,000 and Negros Occidental, 17,500.

The two capital cities in the region were also given separate stocks of rabies vaccines.

Iloilo and Bacolod cities will get 4,000 vials each.

Lumawag said the vaccines will immunize 70 percent of the total dog population in the region this year. (With PIA/PN)
