KALIBO, Aklan – Marriages in Aklan declined over the last two years, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The province recorded 2, 839 marriages last year, 3.2-percent lower compared to 2016’s 2, 932 marriages.
The number of Aklan marriages in 2016 also dropped 6.7 percent, the PSA added.
In 2017, the biggest decline in the number of marriages was recorded in Lezo with 46 percent, followed by Altavas with 40 percent and Libacao with 33 percent.
The highest increase, on the other hand, was recorded in Batan with 104 percent, followed by Balete with 37 percent and Malay with 30 percent.
With these records, the PSA said there is an average of eight marriages daily in Aklan last year.
The PSA recorded the highest number of marriages in Aklan last year in Kalibo with 526, Malay with 427 and Ibajay with 208.
May was the “most favored” month for weddings in Aklan in 2017 with 401 marriages, followed by December with 313 and January with 299, the PSA said.
At least 48 percent of the couples tied the knot via civil weddings last year while the other 47 percent, via Roman Catholic ceremonies.
Last year, most women marry at the age of 26 while men, at the age of 27.
Marriages involving teenage brides were seven times more than marriages involving teenage grooms.
The data were based on certificates of marriage that the local civil registry offices submit to the PSA every month.(With PSA Aklan/PN)
