MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Spikers made a short work of University of the Philippines Lady Maroons 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball at the San Juan Arena.
Desiree Cheng and Kim Kianna Dy led the way with 14 points apiece for the two-time defending champion, which moved up to solo first place in the standings with a 7-2 win-loss slate.
“Well, magandang sign sa team kasi maganda iyong kinikilos nila,” said Lady Spikers head coach Ramil De Jesus. “Isa sa mga targets namin ay mag one or two. Medyo maganda ang position namin ngayon so hopefully magtuloy-tuloy.”
Lady Spikers jumped to a 10-6 lead early in the opening set of the Wednesday match on conversions from Cheng. Consecutive errors by UP followed by pristine hits from Cheng and Ernestine Tiamzon increased La Salle’s lead to as high as 24-14.
DLSU got an early lead in the second 8-4. Lady Maroons rallied back to make it a close exchange at 18-21 but an error from them followed by conversions from Cheng and Aduke Ogunsaya closed the set.
UP was still hanging around early in the third and just behind 13-16 but Lady Spikers countered with hits from Mary Joy Baron, Tiamzon and Ogunsaya to close the match in straight sets.
In the second game, Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws moved up to solo third, while putting University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses on the brink of elimination with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 win.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons rebounded from a personal season-low 5-point effort against Ateneo Lady Eagles with a 15-point, 18-dig, eight-excellent reception outing while Chin-Chin Basas added 10 hits for Lady Tamaraws (6-3)./PN
