BACOLOD City – Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri has committed to facilitate the release of the P150-million fund for the construction of a three-storey museum in the city next year.
Zubiri, who was in the city on Saturday for the turnover of the P10-million plaza development project he facilitated for Bacolod, said the fund will be sourced from the 2019 national budget.
“The budget hearings will start in July after the Senate session resumes. I will make sure to protect the funding for Bacolod City,” Zubiri stressed.
The senator added that he already made a promise to Mayor Evelio Leonardia to help beautify Bacolod, including the construction of the museum, which he called a “flagship project.”
Zubiri said cooperation among local officials will help fast-track all infrastructure projects in the city.
He also appealed to Bacolodnons to set aside political bickering and focus on rebuilding the country.
Zubiri stressed that the Philippines had been left behind by its neighboring countries in terms of development due to “too much” political bickering.
His family has roots in Negros Occidental, that is why he is bringing huge projects in Bacolod, Zubiri said.
He added that he plans to endorse three architectural designs for the museum to Leonardia.
“The name will vary depending on the approval of the city council and the city government. Our plan is to set up a multi-story building. If the mayor will allow me, I will endorse to him three plans. They can pick from the three designs,” Zubiri said.
Zubiri added that his architect friends proposed to build the “iconic” building with three to four floors.
The first two floors will house the MassKara museum, which will display the masks and garments used by performers of the MassKara Festival, while the top floor will house an amphitheater.
“We’re very excited. It’s up to the mayor to choose the location,” he added.
Leonardia thanked the senator for the project, which he described as “a dream come true and something beyond what we expected.” (With reports from Ranie Azue and PNA/PN)
