KALIBO, Aklan – There are no elections hotspots in this capital town, according to the local police.
Kalibo police station head Superintendent Richard Mepania said there are no intense political tensions in 16 villages in the municipality.
These barangays are Andagaw, Bachaw Norte, Bachaw Sur, Briones, Buswang New, Buswang Old, Caano, Estancia, Linabuan Norte, Mabilo, Mobo, Nalook, Poblacion, Pook, Tigayon, and Tinigaw.
Mepania’s statement came in view of the upcoming synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on May 14.
Mepania said they have been monitoring villages in Kalibo since the election period started on April 14 – the first day of the filing of certificates of candidacy.
But even without election hotspots, the local police are still implementing intensified security measures, like installation of regular checkpoints and police visibility operations.
Members of the barangay peacekeeping action teams are also manning the checkpoints together with the cops.
Meanwhile, there will be a covenant signing and unity walk of barangay and SK candidates today.
The event is aimed at encouraging a “fair, safe and peaceful” election in Kalibo.
Stakeholders from religious organizations and civil society groups are also expected to join the event. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
