Business group hopes Sereno appeal will get ‘utmost respect’

Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno

MANILA – Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno’s planned appeal against her ouster should be given “utmost respect and attention,” an umbrella organization of businessmen said Monday.

The Judicial Reform Initiative said it was “concerned” that the Supreme Court gave precedence to a “quo warranto” petition against Sereno over an ongoing impeachment in Congress.

The high court granted the “quo warranto” plea and nullified Sereno’s appointment for failure to fully disclose her wealth when she applied for the chief justice post in 2012.

“We are hopeful therefore that due process will be preserved and any motion for reconsideration given utmost respect and attention,” said the JRI.

“And we welcome any and all efforts to safeguard the integrity and sanctity of our constitutional processes,” it said.

The JRI was established in 2012 by the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Management Association of the Philippines, the Makati Business Club, the American Chamber of Commerce, the European Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Shareholders Association of the Philippines and the Movement for Restoration of Peace & Order.
