BACOLOD City – Bacolodnons must heighten their awareness regarding the ill effects of tobacco use, according to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).
The SP passed last a week a resolution supporting the “World No Tobacco Day,” which is observed on May 31 of every year.
This year, it is themed: “Tobacco, a Threat to Development.”
The event highlights the health risks associated with tobacco use. It also advocates for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
Councilor Ricardo Tan, author of the resolution, said this year’s World No Tobacco Day will focus on the effects of tobacco on the cardiovascular health of people worldwide.
Tan added that tobacco use is a risk factor that could lead to the development of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
The tobacco industry “poses threat to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens,” according to Tan.
He added that the governments and the public must promote health and development “by confronting the global tobacco crisis.”/PN
