MANILA – Negrense lawmaker Rodolfo “Gary” Alejano of Magdalo party-list announced his plan to run for senator in next year’s mid-term election.
The Sipalay, Negros Occidental native said in a statement that he has accepted the nomination of the Magdalo party for him to run in May 2019.
“Yes, I have accepted the nomination,” Alejano said. “The country’s need for independent-minded senators who are willing to forward the interests of the people prompted me to accept the nomination.”
If elected senator, he will “speak for the people, stand up for our democracy, and defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
Alejano, a former soldier, has been vocal against Chinese interference in Philippine territories.
He called for Department of Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano’s resignation for the latter’s alleged inaction on the issue.
Alejano is also a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte.
He filed an impeachment complaint against the President but this was dismissed by his colleagues at the House of Representatives./PN
