BACOLOD City – Locals and tourists witnessed around 50 different kites fly across the sky during the 7th Burangoy Tourism Kite Festival in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

Sipalay City Tourism officer Jerick Lacson said the festival became one of the biggest kite festivals in Western Visayas.

The three-day festival was awarded as the grand winner in the Best Tourism Event (Sports) City Category of the 2018 Pearl Awards organized by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines and the Department of Tourism.

“It’s a plan to bring the Kite Festival to a higher level,” Vice Mayor Ma. Gina Lizares said.

The Burangoy Tourism Kite Festival, which kicked off on March 25, was held at the Poblacion Beach of the southern Negros city.

Burangoy is coined from the words burador or kite and barongoy, a local term for flying fish.

The participants of the award-winning tourism event did not use plastic as materials as a way to promote the reduction of plastic waste.

Lacson said Sipalay City is a perfect spot for kite flying because of the wind and open area at the beachfront, he said.

He added the city government continues to strengthen its effort for sustainable tourism and plastic waste cut campaign. (With a report from PNA/PN)
