MANILA – Plunder convict Janet Lim Napoles was listed under the controversial good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law, based on the documents obtained during a Senate hearing.
The documents wrongly attributed the crime of rape to Napoles.
Sen. Richard Gordon, chair of the Blue Ribbon Committee, questioned Ramoncito Roque – chief of the records division of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) – on Napoles’ inclusion.
“Napaka-incompetent talaga. May intensyon ba talagang palayain si Napoles? Bakit rape ang kaso sa kanya ‘di plunder? There’s something to it,” Gordon said on Wednesday.
Roque said Napoles’ inclusion was “accidental” as the creation of the GCTA for qualified inmates was rushed for a scheduled press conference.
Department of Justice undersecretary Deo Marco, who heads the committee responsible for reviewing activities at the BuCor, said an investigation is underway.
“Either na nasa listahan talaga si Napoles hindi lang natuloy, or nagkamali sa encoding, especially, rape ang sinabing kaso d’yan ni Napoles. I will ask BuCor to explain,” Marco said.
Napoles was sentenced to life in prison by the Sandiganbayan in relation to the priority development assistance fund plunder cases of Sen. Bong Revilla, and former senators Jinggoy Estrada and Juan Ponce Enrile./PN
