ILOILO Science and Technology (ISAT) University, in partnership with Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), DOST Region 6, Great Women Philippines Inc., and local government unit of Miagao, inaugurated the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) at the ISAT University Miagao Campus on Nov. 6. RYPICis the first micro-scale yarn spinning facility which aims to produce crafted yarns from blends of natural textile fibers – abaca, banana, pineapple leaf – and cotton.
It aims to jumpstart local ecosystems for the textile sector and will cater to the requirements of micro, small and medium enterprises in the fashion industry, academe and government institutions for yarns and fabrics using local raw materials, skills, and talents.
ISAT University president Dr. Raul Muyong, DOST secretary Fortunato de la Peña, DOST-PTRI director Celia Elumba, Miagao mayor Macario Napulan, DOST Region 6 regional director Engr. Rowen Gelonga, Great Women Philippines Inc. president Jeannie Javelosa, Commission on Higher Education commissioner J. Prospero de Vera, Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas assistant secretary Anthony Gerard Gonzalez, and DOST’s R&D Projects undersecretary Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara were all present during the inaugural event./PN
