BACOLOD CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office 6 has tentatively rescheduled the staging of the 2020 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet 2020 (WVRAA) from March 21 to 28 in Makato, Aklan.
DepEd-Negros Occidental sports coordinator Romeo Sison said that all 20 Schools Division Offices agreed to tentatively reschedule the staging of the annual regional sporting event during the Regional Management Committee (ManCom) meeting on Thursday.
Sison added that he has directed the Negrense athletes who are on training in other schools and venues to return to their respective schools for the time being and attend their classes.
“They are still encouraged to
continue their training at their schools and wait for further information
regarding the conduct of the meet,” Sison said.
DepEd-Region 6 wrote on their Facebook page that decision to indefinitely
postpone the staging of WVRAA scheduled on Feb. 15-22, 2020 was based on the
recommendations of the Provincial Health Office and the local government unit
of Aklan, as coordinated by DepEd VI Regional Director Ma. Gemma Ledesma.
She said that the postponement of the annual sporting event was in response to
the national government’s call to avoid crowded places as a precautionary
measure to the 2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease.
“We cannot afford to risk the safety and health of almost 6,000 delegates which include athletes, coaches, technical officials, chaperones, and working committees,” she said./PN
