MANILA – Filipino boxer Mike Plania is set to face World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) No. 1 ranked bantamweight champion Joshua Greer Jr. of the United States at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday night (Wednesday in Manila).
This will be the General Santos City-native’s biggest career battle so far.
The 10-round non-title clash is a must win for Plania as it will solidify his status as world championship contender in the division.
Plania’s manager and promoter JC Manangquil of the Sanman Promotions told Panay News that his boxer knows what is at stake in the match, so Plania went all out during his trainings.
“This is the most important fight of his career. This is his key to world title fights. He can’t lose,” Manangquil said in a statement. “His training camp was okay. Mike (Plania) is 100 percent ready to fight.”
Plania, a former RP National Boxing Team member, will enter the match reeling on an eight-match winning streak.
The 23-year-old, currently rated No. 11 in the WBO and No. 12 in the International Boxing Federation as a super bantamweight, is coming off a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Giovanni Gutierrez last December in Miami.
He will parade in the match a 23-1-0 win-loss-draw record with 12 victories coming by way of knockouts, while Greer Jr. has a 22-1-1 card with 12 knockouts also.
The Plania versus Greer clash will serve as the main event of Top Rank Promotion’s third closed-door boxing show this month since the resumption of the sport./PN
