A group of sports enthusiasts in Iloilo City created a Facebook page dedicated to past and present Ilonggo and Ilongga athletes.
Sports LANG page hopes to provide inspiration to future athletes of the city and Iloilo province, said Ilonggo sportsman Rodolfo Go Villaruz in an interview with the Buzzer Beater.
“The page aims to continually promote sports and champion the Ilonggo sporting personalities both in the past and present times who made names locally, nationally and internationally,” he added.
According to Villaruz, Sports Lang has already published several inspiring stories of Ilonggo and Ilongga athletes within just a month after it was created.
“We would like to share inspiration and entertainment to Ilonggos amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic,” Villaruz said. “Iloilo will always be the home where sports can live and grow.”
Aside from the exciting anecdotes, Sports LANG also hosts weekly video podcasts via Zoom on Facebook Live featuring Ilonggo and Ilongga athletes all over the world every Sunday. Villaruz and Emel Maulas serve as the moderators.
De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Aduke Ogunsanya; Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors’ Glaudine Trongcoso; NorthPort Batang Pier’s Juan Paolo Taha; and TNT KaTropa head coach Ferdinand “Bong” Ravena were among those who already guested in the podcast.
Upcoming guests, on the other hand, include National University Lady Bulldogs cagers Kaye and Karl Ann Pingol from Pototan, Iloilo on Aug. 2, NLEX Road Warriors guard Kiefer Ravena on Aug. 9 and Philippine Army Lady Troopers star Jovelyn Gonzaga on Aug. 16.
“Each Ilonggo athlete has inspiring stories to tell. We want them to share those with their fellow Ilonggos through Sports LANG,” said Villaruz.

The six-footer Bernardo is one of the kindest players in the Fighting Maroons squad of head coach Godfrey Okumu. She is also a gracious one when it comes to media interviews.
