BY THE TIME this article is published, the US presidential election would have taken place already, but I still want to discuss why I support Donald Trump.
So in that context, I want to approach the issue from a hypothetical scenario: What if Trump were a Filipino President?
Would Filipinos approve of him or not?
Throughout his first term, he has not started any wars (though he had engaged in two or three bombings).
He has worked to reduce his country’s foreign entanglements in places which did not serve its interests.
He has also helped the Koreans take one step closer to peace and reunification.
He pursued his nation’s interests first and foremost; multilateralism and ideology second.
He engaged in protectionism to advance his country’s work force. He renegotiated or eliminated trade deals which were not in his country’s concerns.
He also reformed the criminal and tax system, and finally, he has delivered on his promise to build a wall to block out illegal immigrants.
I’m sure there are other issues that I have missed but I think these things are what define Trump’s first term.
Please consider the information I just wrote down. If Trump were a Filipino President, would you approve of his administration?
I would.
But of course, Trump is not a Filipino President, and there are unspoken double standards with America and other countries. Sometimes, these double standards benefit America; in some cases, the opposite takes place.
This is the unspoken rule that has spurred so many to hate Trump and his supporters.
President Trump wanted to end globalized America. He wanted to end the US’ overseas military entanglements. At the same time, he wanted to close massive immigration into the USA (the land, as what most Filipino and foreign nationals falsely believe, of milk and honey).
Under Trump, the US would become another country with its own people, borders, values and interests; not the enforcer and final guarantor of the US-led world order. And for that, he has my approval./PN
