BACOLOD City – Local authorities are mulling to utilize classrooms or gymnasiums in public schools here as vaccination centers once vaccines against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) become available.

Councilor Renecito Novero, head of the city government’s Vaccine Center Team, submitted this proposal to Mayor Evelio Leonardia for approval.

Novero said there shall be 22 clustered vaccination centers but this can increase depending on the availability of attending health personnel and other exigencies.

He identified these centers as the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School; Education and Training Center School; Lopez Jaena ; Mabini; Alangilan, Alijis; Banago; Bata; Cabug; Estefania; Felisa and Granada.

The Department of Education already gave its greenlight to utilize school classrooms, Novero said.

Other health centers being eyed are in barangays Mandalagan ; Mansilingan; Pahanocoy; Punta Tay-Tay; Singcang; Sum-ag; Tangub; Taculing;  Villamonte; and Vista Alegre.

Some of the health centers are adjacent to the gymnasium and schools, Novero said.

The need for storage facilities and ready generators in each vaccination center in case of a brownout was also discussed.

“We also tackled the possible funding for each center and holding areas to provide safe, convenient, and expeditious administration of vaccines,” he added.

The city government recently created a COVID-19 Vaccination Council.

Novero was tasked to identify and develop vaccination centers in suitable places within the city, including but not limited to the City Health Office, hospitals, clinics and possible alternative facilities./PN
