KALIBO, Aklan – Cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Aklan breached the 500 mark, recording 36 cases in the last 72 hours, according to health authorities.
Of the new cases, most local transmissions were reported from the capital town of Kalibo and the nearby town of New Washington.
The province recorded 505 positive cases since the pandemic began.
The death toll, on the other hand, rose to 18, with two more people succumbing to the infection this January.
The Aklan provincial hospital in Kalibo is treating six COVID-19 patients while 49 people are being isolated in quarantine facilities, reported the Provincial Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit.
Kalibo, epicenter of the pandemic in Aklan, accounts for 266 cases from March 27, 2020 to Jan. 12, 2021, or 53 percent of the total provincial cases.
Other towns are also seeing a rise in cases 10 months into pandemic – Numancia, 51; Lezo, 33; Banga, 27; Malinao, 20; Balete, 17; and New Washington, 17; Buruanga, 10; Batan, nine; Makato, nine; Tangalan, eight; Libacao, eight; Malay, seven; Altavas, six; Ibajay, six; Madalag, four; and Nabas, three.
As of Jan. 12, people between the ages of 21 and 50 had the highest percentage of COVID-19 cases in Aklan, at 296 or 59 percent of cases.
There have been 11 deaths in Kalibo caused by the novel coronavirus.
Two patients also succumbed to the infection in Numancia while five deaths were reported in Lezo, Buruanga, Libacao, Malay, and Madalag./PN
