ILOILO City – Anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of those who killed the barangay captain of Roosevelt, Tapaz, Capiz will get a monetary reward.
It’s half a million pesos, according to Mayor Roberto Palomar.
Barangay Captain Julie Catamin was shot to death by two unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants in Barangay Malitbog Centro, Calinog, Iloilo on Sunday.
“We seek justice for our village chief,” Palomar told journalists during yesterday’s press conference in Camp Delgado, the headquarters of the Police Regional Office 6 here.
“Vocal in denouncing” the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), Catamin was a “big loss” to Tapaz, said Palomar.
On Sept. 15, 2020, Catamin’s barangay declared the rebels persona non grata.
Brigadier General Marion Sison of the Philippine Army’s 301st Infantry Brigade (301IB) said Catamin was a hero.
“He offered his life so their area would be peaceful and free from rebels’ atrocities,” said Sison.
Meanwhile, Police General Rolando Miranda, PRO-6 director, said a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) was formed to probe the killing.
The task group was headed by Police Colonel Ross Alvarado, deputy regional director for operations, and Police Colonel Gilbert Gorero, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
Miranda also recommended including rights group Panay Alliance Karapatan in the investigation.
“Nauna pa sila nakaalam sa akin or sa ating provincial director at ang bilis nilang gumawa ng statements like they knew the killing. Dapat imbistigahan sila kasi duda ako sa kanila,” Miranda said./PN
