Ilonggos Cachero, Yap bag gold in beach poomsae tournament

Ilonggo taekwondo jins Joshua Cachero and Jilyn Rose Yap took the gold during the 4th Lents Taekwondo Worldwide Sports Online Poomsae Open 2021 over the weekend.

Cachero from Iloilo’s Mark Victoriano Pinggol Taekwondo Gym garnered his first gold medal in the Individual Male Blackbelt Under 30 category. He defeated Zaid Cornejo from Mexico and Abdullah Alabyadh from Saudi Arabia, taking the silver and bronze medals respectively. Cachero then teamed up with fellow Iloilo MVP Jilyn Rose Yap in the mixed pair poomsae blackbelt over 17 category, winning his second gold. They defeated the pairs from Spain, Mexico, and Norway. Niesha Kariz Pequierda, meanwhile, settled for the silver medal in the Cadet Female Blackbelt category, behind gold medal winner Thelma Lozoya of Mexico.

Shanen Anica Feranco and Julienne Dagpin took the bronze medal in the 1st KUP Female Under 17 category, losing to fellow Filipinas Jaoine Cambronero (gold) and Jilliana Dagpin (silver).

“It was a great performance by our players considering this is the first time we competed in a beach poomsae tournament,” said head coach Denmark Pinggol. Pinggol hopes to to steer his team to medal finishes in beach kyorugi this weekend. For the Kids Under 11 Male Blackbelt Individual Beach Poomsae, Japhael Kintanar took home the bronze medal after losing to Asyraf Asisi of Malaysia (gold), Braydon Leong of Singapore (silver) and Samuel Crespo of Spain (bronze). Justine Dagpin also took the bronze in the male 10-1 KUP individual beach volleyball category, behind Mustafa Alzain (gold), Zaki Alzain (silver) and Hosssin Alzain (bronze) from Saudi Arabia. | via Adrian Co
