Drunken cop nabbed for assault, illegal discharge of firearm

ILOILO City – A police officer was arrested for drunken assault and illegal discharge of firearm in Barangay Tingib, Pandan, Antique.

Police Staff Sergeant Jhun Alvarez was assigned at the Pandan police station. He and his live-in partner had an altercation around 8 p.m. on May 4, initial investigation showed.

Alvarez allegedly mauled the woman and threatened her with his M16 rifle.

He also reportedly threatened her partner’s mother-in-law, prompting them to call the police.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Lilibeth Unlayao and Police Staff Sergeants Raffy Lucinio and Arnel Delos Santos responded to the call.

The officers tried to pacify Alvarez, but he resisted and fired his weapon once. Grappling for the gun ensued.

The three officers successfully subdued and disarmed Alvarez.

According to Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, Alvarez would  be relieved from his post and possibly transferred to the Regional Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit (RPHAU).

“He was drunk, and he will be facing many charges. His live-in partner and her mother are willing to file a complaint for violence against women, grave threats, illegal discharge of firearm, and resisting arrest,” Malong said.

The Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) will conduct a “motu proprio” investigation to determine specific administrative charges, she added./PN
