Negros cops gird for use of body cams

BACOLOD City – Police officers of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) are set to undergo training on the use of body cameras.

Body cameras would be used in police operations such as against illegal drugs, according to Police Lieutenant Abegael Donasco, NOCPPO spokesperson.

NOCPPO has yet to disclose how many body cameras have been delivered to the province.
Their use would make police operations more transparent, said Donasco.

Cops wearing body cameras would be unable to switch them off, and even if they do, it would be switched on again by a “controller” at the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) command centers, revealed Donasco.

The only limitation of the camera is its eight-hour battery life.

Only those who have undergone proper training can use the body cameras, Donasco added.
Last week, PNP chief General Guillermo Eleazar formally launched the body cameras at the PNP’s headquarters in Camp Crame.

Eleazar said the use of body cameras should not only lessen police abuses but also protect cops from false allegations./PN
