MANILA – The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is eyeing a “bubble Season 84” in February 2022, if the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic situation permits.
According to UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag, they were hoping to play all sports, but if not possible, they would limit it to men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and cheerdance competition.
“Gusto namin matuloy lahat, we want everything to happen and we’re planning for that… But kung talagang magiging compressed ang schedule, kung talagang magkakagipitan, we have different scenarios and at the very least, certain events must push through,” Saguisag told UAAP Talk.
Ateneo de Manila University became the reigning champion in the men’s basketball and women’s volleyball championships, while National University won the cheerdance competition.
Saguisag stated that they are still hopeful that by that time, the situation will be normalized and that the majority, if not all, student-athletes were vaccinated.
The UAAP was halted in the second half of Season 82 in early 2019 after the country was placed under the enhanced community quarantine.
The league also canceled the entirety of Season 83 late last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, and vaccines were not yet available./PN
