BJMP to Bacolod SP: Ban drones near jail facility

BACOLOD City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is urging the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to pass an ordinance prohibiting the use of drones 100 meters away from the city’s jail facility.

This aims to prevent drug peddlers from sneaking illegal drugs into the jail facility, said Senior Inspector Ian Karl Niaga, warden of the BJMP jail in Barangay Handumanan,

In the Davao City Jail last month, a drone was spotted hovering near the facility. Authorities later recovered three sachets of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as “shabu,” worth P400,000.

Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran said the BJMP’s request was referred to the committee on defense and peace and order under Councilor Al Victor Espino, chairman.

Director Alex Tablate of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 6 earlier said he would focus on Bacolod and Negros Occidental, admitting that these areas were still the “main sources” of illegal drugs.

Tablate said they were monitoring five drug groups there./PN
