ILOILO City – Western Visayas will hold its first ever summit on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) from June 21 to 23 here.
The event will be spearheaded by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) chaired by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 6.
The summit theme is “Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Strategies and Application Towards Sustainable Development and Resilience”.
It aims to link Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) by strengthening national and local level adaptation planning and implementation of local government units in the region.
Cindy Ferrer, OCD-6 spokesperson, said the summit will gather more than 300 participants composed of local chief executives, local DRRM officers, and planning and development officers in the region.
RDRRMC-6 emphasized that building the DRRM and CCA capacities of local planners and DRRM officers is vital in mainstreaming and implementing systematic approaches including measures to reduce the vulnerabilities and risks to hazards and manage the consequences of disasters heading for a resilient region 6.
One of the summit highlights would be the launching of Project SIGNAL or the Strategic Incident Georeferencing for Nationwide Alertness of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Vvarious DRRM-CCA best practices from the different local government units will also be showcased.
Civil Defense Administrator and NDRRMC executive director Undersecretary Ricardo B. Jalad will grace the event as guest of honor and speaker.
He will be joined by RDRRMC-6 chairperson Jose Roberto Nuñez and tthe vice chairpersons of the said regional council./PN
