SEAFDEC stocks up on tiger shrimp breeders.

OVER 300 breeders of tiger shrimp, locally called lukon or sugpo, were stocked in the new Shrimp Broodstock Rearing Facility of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in Tigbauan, Iloilo. Department Chief Dan Baliao said the move is to bolster the research center’s capacity to produce seeds and eventually broodstocks of the prime commodity throughout the year. This, he said, is in line with the center’s Oplan Balik Sugpo Program, which aims to revive the black tiger shrimp industry in the Philippines. A total of 260 broodstock were sourced from Ivisan, Capiz, while 70 came from Himamaylan, Negros Occidental./PN
