Everything But the Latte

WHAT’S a BPO?

Starting a business and getting it off the ground would traditionally entail managing and operating everything in-house. But as a business grows, decisions on maximizing productivity while keeping reasonable costs will have to be made.

Are you looking to scale your business into the global marketplace? Do you want to do this while maintaining close control over your core competencies?

Then a BPO or a business process outsourcing partner is something your business will need. BPO refers to the process of contracting out a non-core (or non-primary) business function to an external third-party provider. Traditionally, the term BPO will refer to companies that:

* provide such services for other businesses; or

* work as a broker among clients, freelancers, and contractors; or

• directly employ relevant staff.

When companies engage a BPO, they pay for the delivery of a service, the use of technology, and the management of employees (among others) at a more reasonable cost compared to having one in-house.

What services do BPOs offer?

A sales associate once replied, “…everything except brew your latte”, which was, of course, said in jest.

But she isn’t wrong.

Most BPOs offer all kinds of services – from providing general tasks to performing transferable services (call centers, accounting, HR management, data entry, and customer relations). Specialized BPOs can focus on specific industries and can provide highly skilled services. For instance, a BPO can zero in on e-commerce services that can provide an entire gamut of operations ranging from quoting, processing, bookkeeping, order management, billing, and payment to payroll and bookkeeping.

The Philippines!

The Philippines is home to the world’s top BPOs thanks to the skilled talent pool and robust English competencies across the country. Ranking consistently among the top outsourcing locations in the world, it is already known as the call center capital.

To date, the Philippines serves millions of clients across Latin America, Europe, Australia, America, and New Zealand. The workforce is at the very least, bilingual. Forty percent speak a third language. BPOs are the largest contributors to the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Revenues as of 2020 have reached US$ 26 billion on average.

Why should your business engage the services of a BPO

The primary purpose is to lower costs. Engaging the services of a BPO allows businesses to leverage low-cost labor for non-core functions. This allows a company’s in-house team to focus on its core competencies instead.

Another huge benefit is a BPO’s access to up-to-the-minute technology. They already have systems in place and are more adept with the intricacies of digital systems that a global business may need. Partnering with a highly-specialized BPO will allow a business to stay current with technology without the heavy cost of frequent hardware upgrades, software licensing, hiring, and training.

Last but not least, a BPO allows a business to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They cut across time zones and can operate in agile and remote working scenarios.
