ILOILO City – Three days after the conclusion of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs), Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his approval of the reconciliation between two major political factions and the formation of a “uniteam”.
But despite his optimism about a unified Iloilo City, Treñas clarified that his political group, Team Uswag, did not initiate the move to reconcile with Team Gugma, the faction led by Cong. Julienne Baronda.
“Amid the speculation that we were the ones who asked for alleged negotiation, we would like to clarify once and for all that we did not ask for this situation,” said Treñas in a statement through his spokesperson, Joy Fantilaga.
Fantilaga noted the negotiation stemmed from a “leadership proposal” for unity.
“On our part in Team Uswag, we accepted the terms and acted in good faith right from the start; we did not falter and held on,” said Fantilaga.
Likewise, Fantilaga said Team Uswag welcomed the union of the two camps, which demonstrated respect for the unity the ruling party has sought to foster.
“I see this as a positive step forward for our city’s future. As we move forward, may God continue to bless Iloilo City as we strive together for unity and progress,” said Treñas.
The confirmation of the “uniteam” was made official through a joint statement signed by Baronda and Raisa Treñas-Chu, Treñas’ daughter. Raisa has filed her certificate of candidacy for the mayoral position in Iloilo City. Baronda is seeking re-election.
Part of the agreement in the union of the two parties includes leaving unopposed the positions of congresswoman and mayor in either slate.
On the other hand, each slate may field its candidate for vice mayor and members of the city council, should they decide to.
In the statement, both camps said they “deeply regretted” their decision to separate politically due to the “unintended consequences.
“This division between our two camps has caused tension and misunderstanding, and in some cases, strained relationships among colleagues. Where there once was harmony, we have seen the rise of discord. Where there was once cooperation, division has taken hold,” the statement read.
The rival parties said they decided to join forces after “deep reflection and sincere dialogue” for the “greater good of our beloved city.”
“Our differences are small in comparison to the shared vision we have for our city’s future. We believe that through unity, we can lead this city to greater heights and ensure a better tomorrow for all,” the statement added./PN
