ILOILO – This province is set to make a strong impression at the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence, with its participation in the “Parada ng Kalayaan” and performance competition at Rizal Park, Metro Manila, on June 12, 2025.
This year, Iloilo will highlight its historical and cultural heritage by featuring the “Cry of Sta. Barbara” float in the float competition and the Tultugan Festival in the performance category.
The “Cry of Sta. Barbara” refers to a historical event that took place in the town of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo during the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. On November 17, 1896, the town became a significant site in the struggle for independence, as it witnessed one of the first major uprisings in Iloilo against the Spanish forces.
The event is often referred to as a “cry” because it marks the moment when Ilonggo revolutionary forces, led by local leaders such as General Martin Delgado, initiated a full-scale revolt against the Spanish authorities.
The float, representing the Ilonggo people’s struggle for freedom, will not only embellish Metro Manila’s streets but also showcase the province’s rich culture and resilience.
The float’s intricate design will reflect the artistic skills of Iloilo’s residents, underscoring the importance of local craftsmanship and heritage.
In addition, the Tultugan Festival from Maasin Town will take center stage in the performance contest. The festival, which celebrates the region’s growing bamboo industry, has earned distinction as the champion of the Kasadyahan Festival for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.
The Tultugan Festival pays tribute to the native bamboo percussion instrument, known as the “tultugan”, which symbolizes communication and musical tradition among the Ilonggos.
The festival’s music, dance, and storytelling offer a vibrant depiction of local culture, emphasizing cooperation and communal spirit.
This year’s inclusion of the Tultugan Festival in the Independence Day celebrations highlights the region’s deep connection to Filipino identity and its dedication to preserving and promoting its cultural roots./PN
