ILOILO – A resident opened fire outside his home, prompting a confrontation with responding police officers on Saturday night, April 12, in Barangay Balabag, Pavia town.
The suspect was identified as 53-year-old Joel Dalisay alias “Nonoy Labordo”, a resident of the said place.
According to initial reports, a concerned citizen alerted the Pavia Municipal Police Station (MPS) around 7 p.m., reporting that Dalisay had discharged a firearm in front of his residence.
Police Lieutenant Gabriel Manguera, deputy chief of Pavia MPS, said when the police team arrived at the scene, they attempted to engage with the suspect. Dalisay, however, drew his firearm, loaded it, and retreated inside his house.
Efforts to negotiate with the suspect were made by Manguera, a barangay kagawad, and Jeffrey Dalisay, a relative of the suspect. Despite attempts to peacefully resolve the situation, the suspect reportedly fired at the negotiating team, forcing the police to return fire in self-defense.
The situation escalated quickly as both sides exchanged gunfire, with Dalisay sustaining a gunshot wound on his right arm but no injuries were reported among the responding officers or bystanders.
In a radio interview yesterday with Major Rolando Araño, spokesperson for the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Dalisay was in stable condition at the hospital.
Authorities added that the suspect was previously jailed in 2020 for illegal drug charges./PN
