ILOILO City – In a move seen as both a nod to cultural tradition and an economic boost for small vendors, the city government has authorized the temporary vending of flowers in Jaro district on May 10 and 11 in anticipation of heightened demand for flowers for Mother’s Day.
Mayor Jerry Treñas signed Executive Order No. 041 allowing vendors to set up stalls along EL 98 Street, specifically beside Pius XII College and near the pedestrian crossing by the traffic lights. The city sees this as a way to preserve the Filipino custom of giving flowers to mothers while providing short-term livelihood to local sellers.
“This executive order supports both tradition and livelihood,” said Treñas, emphasizing the city’s effort to meet the cultural and economic needs of residents.
He noted that flower vending during Mother’s Day has become a familiar and meaningful practice.
Vendors are required to comply with a set of regulations, including securing a valid Community Tax Certificate, a Barangay Business Clearance from Barangay Seminario, identification cards for owners and helpers, and a signed contract with the Special Services Division – Public Order and Safety Management Office (SSD-POSMO).
The order, which took effect immediately upon signing on May 8, mandates that all vendors adhere strictly to the guidelines to maintain order and safety in the designated vending areas.
City officials urged cooperation from vendors and the public to ensure a peaceful, organized celebration of the occasion, reinforcing the administration’s stance on responsive governance during culturally significant events./PN
