A historic first –women at the helm of Iloilo City

FOR THE FIRST time in Iloilo City’s political history, the top three posts — mayor, vice mayor, and congressional representative — will be held by women. Mayor-elect Raisa Treñas, Vice Mayor-elect Love-Love Baronda, and reelected Congresswoman Julienne “Jam-Jam” Baronda now represent a watershed moment in local governance, breaking long-held gender barriers and redefining what leadership looks like in the metro.

This is no token victory. Each of these women brings to the table political experience, broad community support, and clear mandates. Their rise is not only symbolic; it signals a shift in both the political culture and public mindset. That Iloilo City voters chose, or reaffirmed their trust in, women leaders across different political affiliations and generations is a resounding statement: competence and vision know no gender.

Yet this historic alignment also comes with expectations. The next three years offer a unique opportunity to champion inclusive governance, advance social equity, and put forward policies that prioritize health, education, child welfare, women’s rights, and grassroots development — sectors often underserved in traditional political frameworks. With their collective influence, these leaders are well-positioned to elevate these priorities.

More importantly, this moment should inspire a new generation of young women and girls in Iloilo to see themselves as future leaders, decision-makers, and change-makers. The glass ceiling has not only cracked — it has been decisively shattered. But the work does not end with symbolism. These women must lead with transparency, integrity, and boldness to ensure that their historic election becomes more than just a footnote.

What makes this development even more significant is the diversity within the trio. Mayor-elect Raisa Treñas represents continuity from a prominent political family but now carries the challenge of proving she can stand on her own leadership merits. Vice Mayor-elect Love-Love Baronda, a three-term councilor, brings the experience of legislative work and grassroots engagement. Congresswoman Jam-Jam Baronda, on the other hand, has shown legislative vigor in the House of Representatives, and is actively securing national funding and support for local projects. Their varying backgrounds may well complement one another — if collaboration and communication prevail.

Ultimately, this chapter in Iloilo City’s political history should not just be remembered for the novelty of having three women at the top — it should be remembered for what these women were able to do with the power entrusted to them. Will they govern with empathy and resolve? Will they craft policies that uplift the underserved? Will they deliver transformative results?

Time will tell. But for now, Iloilo City has every reason to be proud. In electing women to its highest offices, the city has not only made history — it has opened the door to a more inclusive and hopeful future.
