BACOLOD City – The city government of Sagay in Negros Occidental officially inaugurated the newly constructed Old Sagay Public Market on June 11, in celebration of the city’s 29th Charter Anniversary.
The P45-million facility is located in Barangay Old Sagay. The two-storey market features modern amenities designed to improve local commerce and public service delivery.
On the ground floor, the structure houses eight commercial blocks, 26 fish stalls, seven meat stalls, 12 vegetable stalls, and three comfort rooms. The second floor includes 11 stalls intended for cafés and restaurants, along with additional restrooms.
The facility also incorporates a material recovery facility (MRF), a sewage treatment plant, and a reliable water system — highlighting the city’s commitment to sustainability and sanitation.
The inauguration was led by Mayor Narciso L. Javelosa, Jr., Vice Mayor Leo Rafael M. Cueva, and 2nd District’s Cong. Alfredo D. Marañon III.
Mayor Javelosa presented the project during the ceremony, underscoring its importance to the community and calling on vendors and stakeholders to take part in its proper maintenance and care.
Vice Mayor Cueva expressed his gratitude to Cong. Marañon for facilitating the realization of one of the barangay’s most vital infrastructure projects, particularly as it serves as a gateway to the renowned Sagay Marine Reserve.
He also announced that additional infrastructure is in the pipeline, including improvements to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the elderly.
City Engineer Jezreel Alingco noted that despite challenges — including issues with informal settlers and boundary disputes — the project was completed through the steadfast support and leadership of local officials.
Barangay Old Sagay Captain Rogelio Sayam also extended his appreciation to the city government and the Second Congressional District for delivering a one-of-a-kind structure to their community, expressing optimism that the new market will help stimulate the local economy./PN
