ILOILO City – This city is stepping up its global presence with the formal signing of a Sister City Agreement with Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA — a strategic alliance projected to unlock economic opportunities, strengthen cultural ties, and promote sustainable urban development.
Mayor Jerry Treñas led the virtual ceremonial signing on June 23, at 9 a.m. US Pacific Time (10 p.m. Philippine Time), highlighting the shared vision of both cities to foster mutual cooperation and people-to-people engagement.
“We are excited about this sisterhood. It opens new doors for our beloved Iloilo City and our new sister city, Fort Lauderdale,” said Treñas. “This partnership provides a meaningful platform for open communication, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices that will greatly benefit both our communities.”
The Sister City Agreement, the latest in a string of international partnerships under Treñas’ administration, underscores the city’s efforts to position itself as a globally connected and inclusive urban hub.
Fort Lauderdale — an economic and tourism powerhouse in South Florida known for its waterfront living and sustainability practices — mirrors many of Iloilo City’s development goals. The partnership is envisioned to promote cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and shared strategies in good governance and resiliency.
City Hall said the agreement will enable both cities to explore collaboration in education, tourism, infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and environmental sustainability.
