ILOILO City – A new Brazilian jiujitsu training hub opened its doors today in Iloilo City, marking a fresh effort by leading Filipino jiujitsu advocates to promote the martial art among Ilonggos and cultivate local champions.

Top athletes and instructors from across the country gathered for the launch, which included a seminar aimed at introducing the fundamentals of jiujitsu to both beginners and enthusiasts. Among the featured guests were celebrated practitioners Prof. May Masuda, the first Filipina black belt and Asian Beach Games gold medalist; Aielle Aguilar, a three-time world champion; and bronze medalist David Zaldarriaga.

The event emphasized the role of jiujitsu not only as a competitive sport but as a practical self-defense system grounded in grappling, ground control, and submission holds.

“We believe in spreading the value of this art to as many Filipinos as possible. It empowers people and builds discipline,” said one of the organizers during the opening rites.

With the launch of this new gym on Jalandoni Street, local martial arts advocates hope to see more Ilonggos rise through the national and international ranks of jiujitsu, while fostering a strong community centered on respect, technique, and resilience./PN
