
MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers pulled off a stunning 25-22, 25-18, 28-26 straight set win against Creamline Cool Smashers in the PVL on Tour at the Playtime FilOil Center in San Juan City.
Gel Cayuna stepped up with her efficient ball distribution, finishing with 22 excellent sets to go with five markers to be named Player of the Game as the HD Spikers seized the solo first place with a 3-0 record.
The former Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws playmaker stated that the HD Spikers just exploited the weakness of the Cool Smashers and exploited it with his offensive attacks.
“Every team naman may weakness talaga, nahanap lang namin ‘yung weakness nila at dun kami nag-focus. Pinagtuunan din namin ‘yung strength namin,” Cayuna said in a post-game interview.
She added: “Sobrang happy ko kasi kahit ‘yung mga bagong players sobrang disiplinado sa system ni coach, lahat talaga sumusunod. Ang dami naming natutunan sa game na ito.”
With the score tied at 26-all late in the third set, Cayuna set up sophomore hitter Ishie Lalongisip twice for powerful hits, resulting into their tight 28-26 set win against the Cool Smashers.
Erika Santos top-scored for the HD Spikers with 18 points, coming from 14 attacks, two blocks, and two service aces, while Lalongisip and Roselyn Doria-Aquino added 15 and 10 markers, respectively.
Michele Gumabao was the lone double-digit scorer for the Cool Smashers with 18 points as they slipped to a 2-1 win-loss slate with the defeat.
Meanwhile, PLDT High Speed Hitters kicked off their campaign with a 25-18, 25-21, 28-26 sweep over the Farm Fresh Foxies.
Negrense Kiesha Bedonia led the charge with 14 points, off 10 attacks, two blocks, and two service aces, to be named Player of the Game as the High Speed Hitters improved to a 1-0 record./PN
