ILOILO City – Just a day after his reappointment as City Legal Officer was confirmed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, veteran public servant Atty. Edgar Gil passed away on Wednesday, July 3, at the age of 91.

Gil, who had been confined in the hospital prior to his reappointment, succumbed to pneumonia.

He was officially reappointed by Mayor Raisa Treñas on July 2 and swiftly confirmed by the City Council, marking what would be his final return to public office — a role he had held multiple times.

“It was an honor to appoint him as my City Legal Officer at the beginning of my administration,” said Mayor Treñas. “His confirmation at the City Council was a proud moment for all of us who knew his dedication to public service. His brilliance, integrity, and humility left a lasting mark in City Hall.”

Gil’s decades-long career in public service included his tenure as city councilor and floor leader. Known for his legal acumen and quiet resolve, he was one of Iloilo City’s longest-serving legal officers, offering counsel through both political transitions and legal challenges.

Former mayor Jerry Treñas expressed sorrow over Gil’s passing, calling him “more than a colleague.”

“I loved him as a friend, a steadfast ally, and my most loyal lawyer,” said Treñas. “His passing is a great loss not only to those who knew and worked with him but to the City of Iloilo, which he served with dignity and dedication.”

The city government is expected to hold tribute rites to honor Gil’s lifelong service./PN
