ILOILO – A 28-year-old man died after he was accidentally ran over by a 10-wheeler truck early Tuesday morning, July 29, in Barangay San Jose, San Miguel, Iloilo.
The victim, identified only as alias “Reydio,” a resident of Sigma, Capiz, was working as a helper (pahinante) and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The truck driver, alias “Rene,” 48, is the victim’s uncle and a resident of Zone 1, Barangay San Jose.
According to Police Captain Bryan Alejo, officer-in-charge of the San Miguel Municipal Police Station, the two were drinking together hours before the accident. Due to extreme intoxication, the victim unknowingly laid down and fell asleep under the front portion of a parked dump truck.
At around 3 a.m., Rene attempted to back up the vehicle in preparation for a scheduled asphalt delivery. It was then that his assistant reportedly shouted upon noticing someone beneath the truck. Rene immediately stopped and checked, only to discover that he had already run over the victim who sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The family of the deceased has chosen not to file charges as both parties have reportedly agreed to a settlement.
The San Miguel police have since released the driver from custody./PN
